YHS is hosting its Second Annual Back to School Fundraising Campaign for the kids in Institut Communautaire Lumiere in Haiti.
First, a little introduction of the school we’re asking you to support.
This school is a community school. In Haiti, this simply means a school that provides affordable education for low income kids.
Why does YHS need you to support these kids?
YHS believes kids have the right to be kids and part of that right is to go to school. This should not merely be a privilege for those fortunate enough to afford it. Access to quality education teaches one norms and values, areas of interest in life, career aspirations and development, and of course social skills by interacting with peers. Education allows children to grow to respect others, it teaches them self-value and what they can contribute to society to help their community and country move forward.
What we did in the past
Last year, in partnership with La Belle Creole United for Haiti, we collected enough school supplies to support 135 kids with school uniforms, book bags, notebooks, pens, pencils, geometry boxes, colored pencils, erasers, lunch boxes, and more. This year we are planning on extending that help to support 250 kids.
We started a gofundme campaign and hope that you will help us reach our goal of $3,000.
You may be asking yourself why should I care to support?
There are many reasons we need your financial support.
- Lunch – For the 2015-2016 academic year, we’re taking the initiative to support a free or reduced-cost lunch program for all of the kids in the school. Many of them aren’t able to get food at home and we want to be able to give them at least one meal each school day. We need financial support to pay the staff that prepare and serve the food. As well as sustaining the program throughout the year by providing food and supplies.
-
School Supplies – One of the basic differences between the US educational system versus that of Haiti is the notebooks used in primary schools (the bulk of the students we support) have different margins and spacing. Using any other type of notebook will force the teachers to change their curriculum to adapt to a different system. For that reason we’re not asking you to donate notebooks. We would like to use the funds to buy the notebooks directly from the manufacturer (Henri Deschamps). We also want to save money on buying drums, boxes, and packaging materials to ship these items to Haiti at a high cost. Our goal is to buy the school materials in gross and distribute them to the kids before the first week of school.
-
School Uniforms – Most schools in Haiti require their students to wear uniforms. Without this a child will not be accepted into the school. We purchase the uniform fabric in bulk and distribute it to the kids in need.
Would you rather donate materials?
- We are in need of used or new desktop computers, laptops, printers, toners etc.
- We also need non-perishable foods like rice, beans, canned foods, pastas, dried fruits, nuts, reusable/washable cups & plates.
- We welcome writing utensils, geometry tools, calculators and arts & crafts supplies.
We appreciate the time you took to read this. We strive to be as transparent as possible with our efforts. If you have any questions about our programs please contact us at team@yhsfoundation.org.
